Hello library lovers!
Thank you for being patient since our last check-in! The past few months have been action-packed, with numerous Foundation fundraisers and library events. If you weren’t able to attend any of these awesome events (or even if you were), read on to see what we were up to!
Library Lovers’ Month
Last time we checked in, it was February and Library Lovers’ Month was well underway. Library Lovers’ Month allows library patrons to express gratitude for their librarians and the resources that their local library offers. We created ways for patrons to share their appreciation for their library staff by posting personalized posters at each branch and treating our library staffers to some tasty morsels.1 Of course, nothing can repay the MPL staff for what they do each day, but we want to make sure they know that we see their struggles, watch their successes, and are cheering them on in every way. Check out some of the kind things patrons had to say below!

Poll: Where does the apostrophe go in “Library Lovers’ Month”? Our team settled on after “Lovers”, but we had days-long debates over this issue…
Library Love is Permanent
Since this is only the second ever iteration of our tattoo event, we were astounded by the number of people who showed up for Library Love is Permanent in late March. In collaboration with Underground Art, flash tattoos with literary themes were offered to the public, with all proceeds benefiting the Memphis Public Libraries. By the end of the 8-hour event, 11 volunteer tattoo artists gave out over 100 tattoos, with hundreds more people showing up to offer support. We are so appreciative of the tattoo artists who made the event what it was, as well as the patience and kindness from the public, some of whom waited several hours for their tattoos! We’re still learning about this event and brainstorming ways to make it better, so thank you to everyone who came for your feedback and support!

Libration
After such a massive event as Library Love is Permanent, it was nice to have an event where our friends, family, and supporters could unwind, listen to good music, and enjoy a few beers, all while supporting the library! Local band Turnstyles rocked out while everyone - including kids and dogs - enjoyed the beautiful April weather and local beer from Wiseacre Brewing.

Bookstock
Bookstock is one of the biggest events of the year at the Memphis Public Libraries and this year, Memphis was lucky to welcome two accomplished authors: Dr. Roxane Gay and Shamichael Hallman. Dr. Gay, author of Hunger and Bad Feminist and professor at Rutgers University, was interviewed by our very own Executive Director, Christine Weinreich. Shamichael Hallman, Director of Civic Health and Economic Opportunity at the Urban Libraries Council and author of Meet Me at the Library, was also featured at the event, interviewed by Mark Fleischer. Mr. Hallman is also the former manager of Cossitt Library, so he knows Memphis and our library system very well. We were glad to see a familiar face and to welcome Dr. Gay to Memphis for the first time!

Brunch ‘N Write with Roxane Gay
While planning Bookstock, we heard from a reputable source that Dr. Gay is a big fan of the Real Housewives franchise… and we have to admit that our staff is, too! To shake things up a bit, we offered a Brunch ‘N Write based on Real Housewives scenes, offering attendees the option to write creatively with Dr. Gay and laugh over the insanity of the Real Housewives. Dos Hermanos catered our brunch and mimosa bar, while Dr. Gay offered reflections on “reality television” as a genre, a feminist take on The Real Housewives, and creative writing tips. We would like to specifically thank the staff of the Cossitt Branch Library, who kept the event running smoothly and stylishly, as well as Innovator in Residence, Ena Esco, for her interview of Dr. Gay after the event on the Verbally Effective podcast.

Comic Con
The fun’s not over yet! We’re thrilled to support MPL staff at 2025 Comic Con, a massive event that draws pop culture fans from all over the Midsouth. This year, the featured guest is Chris Parnell, SNL alum, notable voice actor, and a native Memphian! Be sure to check out Chris signing autographs, as well as his Q&A session later in the day. Find the full schedule here, including storytime, a cosplay contest, trivia, and a SuperSmash Brothers tournament! Check out some pictures from past MPL Comic Cons and come see this year’s edition this Saturday at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library!

After such a busy few months, we’re excited to continue supporting the Memphis Public Libraries this summer with Explore Memphis, summer programs, and more! Stay tuned for more incredible programs that reflect the Memphis community, and follow us on Instagram and Facebook for updates!
